Trap league software: how electronic scoring works
Most trap leagues still run on a paper scoresheet, a clipboard and a spreadsheet someone fills in after league night. Electronic scoring puts the score on a phone at the trap, and standings, averages and handicaps update as each round is saved. Here's how it works, and what to look for.
What it replaces
- The paper scoresheet, or at least the retyping. The scorer marks each target on a phone, or the paper sheet is photographed and read in.
- The league spreadsheet. Team and individual standings, averages and high scores work themselves out from the saved rounds.
- The text-message chain. Subs, schedule changes and announcements go to the club, league or team in one place.
- The season that lives in one person's head. Rosters, scores and dues sit in the club's account, so any admin can pick it up.
How scores get in
1. Score live at the trap
The squad's scorer taps hit or lost for each target in shooting order, station by station. Rounds saved with no signal are kept on the phone and sent when it's back online. A live board shows every field as targets fall.
2. Photograph the sheet
Clubs that keep paper keep it. A photo of the scoresheet is read into stations and totals for the scorer to check and save. Trap Stats checks each row adds up to its total and matches names against the team roster.
3. Type it in
Station totals or shot by shot, singles or doubles, for nights you'd rather just enter the numbers.
What updates on its own
- Standings for teams and individuals, per league and season.
- Averages and hit rates, for each shooter and each station.
- Handicap yardage from your league's own rule or members' ATA cards, and an optional score handicap on individual standings.
- Shoot-offs, shot by shot, miss and out.
- Badges and personal bests, including the next 25 straight.
The rest of the club
- Chat, moderated by your own people. Club admins, league admins and squad leaders can remove a message or lock a thread.
- Calendar and tournaments. League nights, club events and open shoots with their own rosters, divisions and online entry fees.
- Announcements. Post to the whole club or one league, by notification and email.
- Your data, both ways. Bring your roster and past scores in from a spreadsheet. Export everything, any time.
Setting up a club
- Create the club and its first league and season.
- Bring in the roster and last season's scores from a spreadsheet, or invite members with a link.
- Set up teams and squads, and the league's yardage rule if it uses one.
- Score the first league night, live or from the sheet.
There's no hardware to buy: the phones your scorers already carry are enough, and the clubhouse TV or computer can show the board in a browser.
What to look for when you choose
- Does it work with no signal at the range? Scores shouldn't be lost when the trap house has one bar.
- Can you keep your paper sheets? Not every scorer wants a phone at the trap.
- Can you get your data out? Look for a full export to spreadsheet files, any time.
- Is the price posted? And is there a free way to try it on a real league night?
- Does it handle your league's handicaps? Yardage by rule or card, and score handicaps if you use them.
- Does it cover the rest of the club? Dues, waivers and the calendar, or another set of tools for those.
